Quite obviously the previously reported Geohot hack regarding the ps3 has failed to bare fruit. We now have what looks to be a genuinely effective way to run backups and user created applications on the PlayStation 3. It is quite simple to operate and doesn't require opening the console or fiddling with it in any significant way. The hack comes in the form of a USB dongle which plugs into a USB slot on the PS3 and allows you to backup disc based games to an internal or external HDD using their backup manager and run those games using the same application. It seems to work by turning retail consoles in debug units temporarily, thus allowing them to run/install applications that are not vetted by Sony. As the games will be running off a hard drive and not the Bluray drive, we can expect some better loading times from such games.
